Review Fix Exclusive: Redlands Frontman Ben Lohle Talks ‘Adventurer’

Review Fix chats with Ben Lohle, frontman of Redlands, who discusses the band’s new single, “Top Shelf Liquor,” off their new EP, “Adventurer.” Breaking down their goals for the rest of the year and their creative process, Lohle gives us an inside look at what makes the band tick.

Review Fix: What did you guys learn about yourselves through this EP?

Ben Lohle: I think we learned that we could do this ourselves, maybe not everything, but we knew where we could cut costs to try and make releasing new music a healthy cycle.

Review Fix: How is this EP different from your first release?

Lohle: Well it’s a collaboration I had with some friends I know in band called This Century. I came to my friend Sean with these ideas and a vision and we wrote and recorded some songs over the course of two weeks in his studio down in Phoenix, AZ and the rest is history. As where The Lonewolf EP, three of us went out to LA for a couple days and tracked it live with producer Matt Grabe.

Review Fix: How was “Top Shelf Liquor” written?

Lohle: Honestly, through Skype, no, but I can’t honestly remember. There’s songs ideas I’ve had that have been in the bank for 3-4 years. We kinda just started jamming ideas and it somehow made the list (I say that because I feel like there’s always a couple songs you wish made the album over of others, but I think with each recording process you take and learn what you want from it).

Review Fix: How is this band different?

Lohle: think we’re different because we take chances and we’re honestly just trying to be a band. What I mean is, from what I’ve learned you have to live for what you want. If you wanna be a touring artist, then book yourself some damn shows, if you wanna be on the local radio, then give a damn and record a professional product and walk in their office and give it to them. It’s about making something happen and paying your dues and being in it for the long haul because you love music, but like any small start up business you have to be all about it 100% and that means every aspect.

Review Fix: What makes this EP special?

Lohle: I think it’s very special because if it weren’t for everyone that supported us we wouldn’t have been able to make it.

Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?

Lohle: I want to be remembered as a band that inspired other bands to try new things and ideas and going the extra mile whether it’s to get one more person through the door at a show or one more fan online.

Review Fix:  What’s the band’s goals for the next year?

Lohle: Well this leads us into something pretty big actually, we’ve actually started tracking and recording for our first full length album which we’ll be announcing on our social medias here soon. We’ll be recording everything ourselves in our own environment and studios back home in Colorado. From there we’ll send it off to get mixed and mastered, but we’re confident and super excited to try something new and exciting as this and hope you’ll be all about like we are. All the songs the songs and ideas are demoed out at this point, we started tracking guitars the other day and that’s when it hit us that this will be pretty exciting experience. We’re actually filming and making a whole series of the process which we’ll be releasing throughout the release so people can get to know us better and see how we create music. You’ll be able to follow everything at redlandsmusic.com or just “Like” us on Facebook.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Lohle: Honestly, for us one off shows and 2-3 day regional runs all while recording this new album I think is all in store for us this year, but we’ll keep everyone posted throughout the recording process and like I said you can follow all of that at redlandsmusic.com
