Death Head #1 Review: Pretty Awesome

Creepy towns and creepy people make for one hell of an experience. Whether they’re in a video, novel, movie or comic it is guaranteed to create some intense atmosphere. “Death Head” by Zach and Nick Keller with art by Joanna Estep hits all the rights notes for scary stories.

There are three different stories going on. The first is about a couple who come across a town in the middle of the woods. The other is a delinquent girl dealing with the everyday life of going to a private Catholic school for girls. The other is of a boy who’s bullied into going into a tunnel where legend says a masked killer lives.

All three stories range in how interesting they are. The most interesting is of the couple. They do get into a heap of trouble once they snoop around into places they shouldn’t. This story has a ton of potential to be scary in that usually creepy towns have people that want you dead. It’s also a chance to see how close these two characters are.

The story of the bullied kid is the next interesting. There have been plenty of stories like this. In fact, R. L. Stine has made it his career to writing stories like this. That doesn’t mean that this will be horrible. The Kellers can work this story in a way that will leave the reader in shock and awe.

The last story is pretty boring. It’s the typical problem child who hates where she is and turns to drugs. This is so grounded in reality that it’s boring. Unless something truly spectacular happens to her, this is a bust.

The artwork is fitting for this type of story. The character designs and color bring out the creepy atmosphere of the entire place. This is especially true with the couple’s story. Here, when the truly scary moment happens, it is done in a terrifying fashion. That scene is the best written and drawn out of the entire comic.

“Death Head” starts off strong and has the potential to be awesome. Two of the stories can make the reader die of fright, but the third is a miss. Great art also helps with the entire experience.
