Review Fix chats with singer Kat Perkins, who breaks down her first solo record, “Drive.†Discussing the inspiration behind the record and her goals for the future, Perkins lets us know exactly why she’s an artist to keep an eye on.
Review Fix: What was it like putting this album together?
Kat Perkins: It was fun! It was like making my very own special recipes of my favorite food dishes! It took an immense amount of energy, time, and creativity but it’s really my favorite part of the industry. I like being creative and furthering my artistry. I got the pleasure of working with a ton of my very talented friends on this album. I collaborated with writers and musicians mainly in Nashville and Minneapolis for this one! Ive never been more proud of a project in my life.
Review Fix: What makes this album special?
Perkins: This is my VERY FIRST SOLO RECORD in my life. It was a lot different for me as I come from a “band” background. I connect with every song on this record a little differently. It’s diverse! We did everything from pop to rock, to blues, to big ballads. I didn’t necessarily want this record to be genre specific. I just wanted it to be great.
Review Fix: Where do you draw inspiration from?
Perkins: I draw inspiration from a ton of things! Life is my favorite inspiration. I love hearing other peoples stories and life experiences. I look to my family and friends for a ton of inspiration too! This year I was involved in an anti-bullying campaign that I started called “Dream it Do it” and I spoke to over 30,000 young adults this year and they were the most inspiring thing that’s ever happened to me. So much talent in our future with our young adults across the nation.
Review Fix: What song do you think has the best story behind it?
Perkins: On this record I think “Main Street” has the best story behind it. It’s a little bit of a dark piece, but the song creates a very strong vision in your mind when you listen to it. It’s not based on any one true story, it was written completely from creativity based on a small town that we had visited.
Review Fix: What do you think makes you different?
Perkins: That’s a tough question. I’m not sure I’m that ‘different’ but I do have an extraordinary position in life as a singer and entertainer. I realized early in life that I was put on this earth to entertain and that it was a strong passion for me. I worked very hard and continue to work hard to be able to do what I love every single day. My parents and family instilled a very strong work ethic in me and I’m so grateful for that.
Review Fix: What did you learn about yourself from this album?
Perkins: I think the main thing I learned is to embrace my artistry in this diverse record. I learned that confidence is key. You have to believe in yourself for an album to become this successful as an independent artist. Never give up.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this album?
Perkins: I think my goal was met! I just really wanted to create something from my heart that I was proud of and get it out to my fans. LOVE MY FANS and the whole reason I continue as an artist is because they are loyal and continue to support my journey. My job is to keep producing great music for my fans to be entertained!
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Perkins: Another tough question.  My sound is ME. My sound is honest. My sound is from the heart. My sound is edgy with a side of sweet and a dash of salt! I like to be diverse. I like to be loud, and I like to be inspiring. I love to tell a story with my voice.
Review Fix: What do the next few months look like for you?
Perkins: We are currently touring in support of the new record and we are playing 3-4 shows a week till the fall and then i start up my anti-bullying campaign in schools again. We will resume playing on the weekends as well and we are working on a Christmas show as we speak for the holiday season. Never a dull moment. I’m also working on my first children’s book also called “Dream it Do it” to be released in the fall.
