‘NBA Live 16’ Hands-On Thoughts

Review Fix Editor-In-Chief Patrick Hickey Jr. got the opportunity to play “NBA Live 16” at the posh Terminal 23 in New York City last Saturday, a full two weeks before the game hits store shelves on Sept. 29 on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Here are a few things that stood out during his gameplay session.

Updated Visuals: Every year there’s a side-by-side graphical comparison between the Live series and “NBA 2K,” but this year, Live has stepped it up. During instant replay segments, one of the game’s developers, Ryan Santos zoomed in on the faces of Paul Pierce and Ryan Westbrook. There’s no doubt that the visuals are improved this year.

Cloth Animations are Beautiful: Taking a page from the FIFA and NHL series, the cloth animations in “NBA Live 16” are gorgeous. Seeing those shorts and shirts sway from natural movement is pure eye candy.

Plenty of Options in “Pro-Am Mode”: With 2K’s MyCareer mode always getting a ton of attention and their streetball mode being an instant hit last year, the “Pro-Am” mode in “Live” allows you to scan yourself into the game and with a host of create options, from major brand shoes and a ton of tattoos, it’s easy to put yourself in the game. While this option has been done by 2K in other ways in year’s past, it’ll be nice to see what EA does here. Promising quick loading times and the ability to just jump right in, the sandbox gamers will have a ball with this.
