Review Fix chats with writer Joshua Fialkov, who discusses the second issue of his new series via Jet City Comics, “King.†Breaking down how the series has changed since issue one, Fialkov lets us know exactly why we should give it a read.
Oh yeah and baby fights.
Review Fix: How has the series grown since issue one?
Joshua Fialkov: Part of the joy of working with Bernard and Marcelo is that every issue, I get to see a new and even more twisted version of the world of KING. I think, especially, in issue 2, realizing just how far we can push not just the world building, but also the character work really gave me a chance to try something a bit brasher.
Review Fix: What makes issue two different?
Fialkov: First of all, Baby Fights. Second of all, Baby Fights. I think now that King has started his journey, and a lot of the setup is out of the way, we can really just play with what it means to be the human being fighting for not just his own survival but for that of his entire (clearly, nearly extinct) species. And doing that in the face of a plethora of pinatas- Er, rather, apocalypses, just never gets an easier.
Review Fix: Why should someone jump into the series now?
Fialkov: I mentioned the Baby Fights right? What about the killer robotic karate bears? More than anything, KING is a book about me and my friends exploring just how far you can push the medium, our characters, and each other to make something really, really special. Plus, that (nigh sold out) first issue is available over at ComiXology, making it easy as hades to catch up.
Review Fix: Without giving anything away, what should readers expect from the series moving forward?
Fialkov: Man-eating plants, Robotic Police Brutality, a few accidental summonings, and, possibly the rebirth of the human race.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Fialkov: For King? Issue 3! For me? I’ve got the 10th Anniversary Edition of ELK’S RUN coming out from Oni Press, as well as Volume 2 of THE LIFE AFTER, Volume 3 of THE BUNKER, and, a whole new ongoing series starting from them this winter. It’s a busy time for me. I plan on sleeping post-mortem. You can always find more updates and rambling from me at www.thefialkov.com or on Twitter @joshfialkov.
