Review Fix Exclusive: Singer/Songwriter Kendall Lake Talks Music and Goals

Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Kendall Lake, who discusses new single “Voices,” as well as her inspirations and goals for the future. A seasoned performer and gaining momentum in the LA-area, Lake has already performed at some of the city’s biggest and well-renowned venues such as the Troubadour, House of Blues and Viper Room.

Review Fix: What makes you want to sing?

Kendall Lake: The weird thing is I didn’t want to sing for a long time. It’s something very personal and therapeutic for me. And for a while I didn’t want to taint it. I didn’t want to put it in a position to be judged. When I sing it’s the only time I feel like myself, it’s the only time I am true happy and it’s the only time I’m not in my own head or thoughts. So is less of a “want” to sing it’s more of a “need”! I need to sing to be happy.

Review Fix: What makes you a unique singer?

Lake: I’m not sure if I’m a unique singer honestly. I’m actually really insecure about my voices. I’m constantly listening to my vocals and wanting to change or adjust or improve them. Perhaps the only thing that makes my voice and music unique is I literally listen to every genre and it comes out in my music. I know I’m not the first or only person to do this but for me, I take pride in not being put in a box. I just want to make music that makes people feel connected to me and each other.

Review Fix: What’s special about these current batch of singles you’ve released?

Lake: I believe the specialty of my current singles is that they aren’t and weren’t geared or made as a gimmick.  I didn’t write them thinking, “Oh this is the next single”, I just write them and put them out. I’m so happy and feel so grateful that people dig them.

Review Fix: You’ve discussed your live shows and your personality, how it plays a role. Any interesting stories from live performances?

Lake: Oh my goodness, I can tell you this, no two shows are the same. I try my best to not just play song after song. I tell stories, I drink on stage, I fuck up lyrics and notes sometimes, but no one cares. When people to come to my show I share my soul with them. I go out of my way to suck them into my life which in turn is my music. I remember someone was playing the recorder, like from middle school, at the Viper Room in the middle of my set. It was amazing! I gave them a mini solo, live shows are the best.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2016?

Lake: My goals for 2016 are to continue what I’m doing now. Give everyone music and I would love to play festivals like the Warped Tour and SXSW. Do you know anyone that could help with that?!?! Just kidding (unless you really know someone).

Review Fix: What’s next?

Lake: World domination.
