Review Fix Exclusive: Enrique Cabeza Talks Season Two of ‘The Last Door’

Review Fix chats with Enrique Cabeza, Creative Director for The Game Kitchen, who discusses the second season of “The Last Door.” Breaking down the development process and the gameplay changes for the first episode, “The Playwright,” Cabeza is confident the indie point and click adventure will be a hit with fans.

Review Fix: What was the reception like for Episode One?

Enrique Cabeza: Amazingly well! We’re very happy to say that the first season was highly anticipated since the Kickstarter campaign.

Review Fix: What was the biggest criticism you faced? How did you address it?

Cabeza: The biggest criticism usually is the gameplay length. We make the length we can afford to as a small studio with very scarce resources. And we always choose to make the best content we can offer at the expense of the gameplay length. Sometimes games are long but a lot of their content has little of interest, so we prefer to do the opposite.

Review Fix: What else did you learn from Season One?

Cabeza: For Season Two, we developed with a completely new engine, which means we needed to learn a lot of new technical stuff, and a totally new pipeline for developers, artists and designers. But we achieved more efficiency in the development process in so many ways.

Review Fix: How is Season Two different?

Cabeza: The episodes of the Season Two are longer than Season One, with more areas to explore, new mechanics, more beautifully crafted, with a lot of interesting situations for the characters. And the most important thing is that there will be major story revelations.

Review Fix: What are your goals for this episode?

Cabeza: As developers we want to put the players in a whole new narrative situation, where a lot of information will be revealed and the game universe will be expanded more than ever. And of course, the  biggest revelations are in this new second season.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone play it?

Cabeza: The second season is vital in the story of The Last Door. A lot is going on, and players take control of new main character who has to solve a several mysteries from his point of view. The episode are longer than ever, it has better sound, wide-screen support, and much better graphics and effects. And of course, players will again feel the genuine atmosphere of the game. And you cannot miss the new soundtrack by Carlos Viola! It’s amazing!

Review Fix: What’s next?

Cabeza: We’re excited to reveal the series’ ending, where mysteries and questions will be answered. We cannot wait to see the fans reactions. As for The Game Kitchen, it’s still too early to know what is going to be our next project. We’re totally focused on finishing The Last Door right now.
