Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter NLX, who discusses her new album, “Luxury of Failure.†NLX also discusses her Dark Pop style and what the album means to her.
About NLX:
Currently based in NYC, but raised in the icy shadows of Canada’s steel city smokestacks, NLX stays true to her proud legacy of BS-free, Northern songwriting women, but with a little bit of New York swagger. The songs are the collected tinder of the heart.
Review Fix: Where did you get your start in music?
NLX: I didn’t grow up a prodigal child with piano lessons. As far back as I remember, I was always drawn to the piano.
Review Fix: What is Dark Pop?
NLX: It’s a title someone bestowed on my last record ‘Bitch Get Fit’ and it stuck. I take it as a compliment, music that has hooks, but is rooted more in something more melancholy.
Review Fix: What’s the standout song on this album to you? What’s the story behind it?
NLX: Currently, Put It To Bed. It feels relevant event though it was written almost 4 years ago- The story behind it-in the words of Kenny Rogers, You gotta know when to fold em and I say you gotta know when to say good night and good bye to certain
idea’s or dreams or people, put it to bed, move on, let go.
Review Fix: What did you learn about yourself as a performer through this album?
NLX: I learned how much more there is to learn, but also how you sometimes have no control of how a song grows and blossoms,
happy accidents in the studio become a magical moment. Never lose faith in the process however long it take, but never let go of your vision and direction.
Review Fix: How was “Lullabye” written?
NLX: It began with a melody line, and then it grew. I write very stream of consciousness, and this one just felt right from the start. I appreciate how it takes it’s time and rushes for nobody.
Review Fix: Who are your musical heroes? Why?
NLX: My musical hero’s are many, but the first two who come to mind are Bach and Trent Reznor. They both know how to use and respect tension and release.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
NLX: Observe. Absorb. Write. Repeat.
Review Fix: Why should someone listen to the new album?
NLX: Because it is beautiful, tactile and relatable.
Review Fix: What’s next?
NLX: Observe. Absorb. Write. Repeat.
