Lone Wolf 2100 Review: Lacking

“Lone Wolf and Cub” is considered to be one of the greatest manga ever created. So the idea of Dark Horse doing a collaboration with its creator, Kazuo Koike, to do a reimagined version called “Lone Wolf 2100” written by Eric Heisserer with art by Miguel Sepulveda should be enough to raise hopes. It’s a shame that the first issue is a major disappointment.

In a post-apocalyptic future, a virus has turned mankind in monsters called Thrall. The US government has decided to take action by using a neurotoxin to get rid of them. The only problem is that neurotoxin is with a girl who is on the run with a Japanese soldier.

However, Heisserer decided to make it like a post-apocalyptic story like “The Last of Us” (a post-apocalyptic world where the girl has the cure and is being escorted by a grown man.) There are even factions that want to kill every human they see.

It’s too bad that the comic isn’t all that interesting. The characters so far are boring, uninteresting and lack any real personality. Itto, who is supposed to be the awesome action hero protector, has almost no personality to speak of. It is possible to reuse a plotline as long as the characters and writing are strong, but here none of those elements shine through. This is a shame because “Lone Wolf and Cub” is such an excellent series.

The art is the only decent thing about the comic. The worst thing that can be said about the character designs is decent, nothing too spectacular. The design of the Thralls is disappointing. They just look like the typical comic book ghoul. The rest of the comic looks like the typical post-apocalyptic world setting we’ve seen plenty of times.

“Lone Wolf 2100” may have the name, but the same quality is absent. The story is typical, the characters uninteresting and the art is underwhelming. Fans of “Lone Wolf and Cub” will not find any of the great things they came to expect from the series.
