Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Sarah McGuinness who discusses her new track, “Christmas Everyday,†as well as what the new year has in store for her.
Review Fix: How was this song written?
Sarah McGuinness: I was feeling a bit down in early December one year and passed a stall selling fir trees – that smell brought me straight back to how excited and free I used to feel at this time of year…and all those powerful memories came flooding back.
Review Fix: What do you think inspired it the most?
McGuinness: A feeling of nostalgia for Christmases of childhood when the most one had to worry about was who would make it to the top of the charts for ‘the Christmas No. 1’ which was a huge thing in the UK years ago. Compared to the worries we’ve got in the world right at this moment it’s a little light relief and a moment of hope.
Review Fix: What is your idea of a perfect Christmas?
McGuinness: Being with the people you love, and feeling grown up enough to accept everyone for exactly who they are, that is, not chucking the turkey at them when they annoy you.
Review Fix: How do you want this song to resonate with people?
McGuinness: I want people to remember that we all feel ambivalent at Christmas, that none of us are alone, that the person next to you is probably feeling as sentimental and mixed up as you are.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this song?
McGuinness: I’d love to see it go viral, and to hear it played at Christmas parties with people shouting out the chorus of ‘No More Sad Songs!’ at the end in a drunken and merry state before staggering home and feeling a bit more at peace with the world.
Review Fix: What’s next for Sarah McGuinness?
McGuinness: In March next year I’m putting out the album I’ve been working on for a long time now – watch this space! That is a huge thrill for me and I can’t wait.
I’ve also just completed the soundtrack for the documentary  “Noma – Forgiving Apartheid’ which has just been long-listed for the BAFTA’s.
