NXT Coverage: New Year, New Rivalries

The first NXT of 2016 was full of surprises as plenty of drama in every championship division, as well as some solid mid-card action took place. With the seeds in the soil for a monster #1 contender’s match for Finn Balor’s NXT Championship in two weeks and a new NXT Women’s #1 contender in Carmella, NXT has started this year off with a nice pop.

While it would have been nice to have a few matches, the extra promo time allowed for Enzo Amore and Colin Cassidy to tell the world they are ready to challenge for the NXT Tag Titles again while the new faces of the NXT Women’s division got some much-needed face time as well.

Add in the return of Sami Zayn and his budding rivalry with Samoa Joe and Baron Corbin and that’s a recipe for success.

Matches:

Tommaso Ciampa vs. Danny Birch: This was the type of match that many expected to be interrupted. Overall, it was a better match than expected as the brawler Birch took it to the indie star Chimp. Highlights included some awesome strikes from Birch, but Ciampa stole the show with a Slingshot Downward Spiral variation and got the win with a cool modified Arm Bar.
