Review Fix chats with electric violinist Sarah Charness who discusses her new singles, “Grip” and “We Came to Party,” as well as her collaboration with Jem Cooke.
Review Fix: What inspires you musically?
Sarah Charness: I gain my inspiration both from different artists and from life experience. I was introduced to the electric violin by Mark Wood, who also is the maker of my instrument. When I was just 16 years old, I purchased the instrument that I now play today and so much of that also influenced my musical style. Furthermore, I started diving into electronic beats and figuring how the violin could fit in.
Review Fix: How was “We Came to Party†written? Is there a story behind it?
Charness: Yes. I was introduced to Disco Killerz by a mutual friend and we started playing around with a few ideas. It was difficult because they had never really worked with a violinist before and neither of us was quite sure how to go about making a full on electro house beat featuring my instrument. Uri, a member of Disco Killerz and I started playing around with this old Russian Folk Tune that later became the main theme in We Came to Party
Review Fix: What attracted you to the electric violin?
Charness: The main attraction for me was the ability to bring the instrument into a non-classical genre in a much easier way. The acoustic violin is beautiful of course but it doesn’t translate as well in terms of big EDM shows.
Review Fix: What was it like to work with Jem Cooke?
Charness: She was absolutely lovely. She is from the UK and just an incredible talent. Everything with her was so easy and her voice is stunning.
Review Fix: What’s on your musical bucket list?
Charness: More collaborations for sure! I would love to collab with some bigger DJs.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2016?
Charness: Definitely to write more music, play more shows, and just keep doing what I’m doing. I’m so lucky to be doing this.
