Review Fix chats with four-piece R & B group Fourtune to learn about their origin, inspirations and how their single “I’m Falling†was written.
About Fourtune:
Fourtune’s break-out track, “I’m Falling,” boasts a consistent palette of lush, low-key grooves that billow into an all-out 90’s-style R&B ballad. The bumping beat pulsates beneath sweeping harmonies dripping in soulful vibes. It’s a quintessential love song with simmering romanticism and deep, hypnotic vocals, designed to get listeners in the mood to fall in love.
The vocal group, comprised of Kal’L, D. Rose, D. Nell, and Chop, effortlessly transport listeners back in time with influences that range from Boys 2 Men and New Edition, as well as the smooth styling of artists like Usher and Brian McKnight. Each member contributes their exceptional talents of songwriting, multi-instrumentation, and producing, on top of their roles in creating a deep, expressive vocal sound.
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Kal’L: I had an idea to put a 4 man group together. Chop and I work together and I knew he was a choir director. So I figured he knew a couple other singers we could work with. He brought me D. Nell and another artist. After a couple rehearsals, we cut the other artist and I replaced him with D. Rose. The rest is history.
Review Fix: How was “I’m Falling” written?
D. Nell: I was working on a project for a little girl and had started writing her first single. I was singing it at rehearsal one day and Kal loved it immediately. He told me to prepare the little girl I was working with for bad news ’cause her first single had now become Fourtune’s first single. Kal wrote the first verse and the hook. D. Rose wrote the second verse. And I wrote the bridge. Chop wrote all the harmonies.
Review Fix: What makes you guys unique?
D. Rose: What makes us unique is that we don’t have a lead singer. Which ever voice sounds best in a song is the person that leads it. We all have extensive vocal ranges, so it’s very easy to construct harmonies for our music. We’re all tenors, but Kal does base at times. D. Nell can hit Soprano if need be. And Chop is very comfortable singing Alto. So we fill in where we need to.
Review Fix: What acts inspire you the most?
D. Rose: We’re inspired by greatness. Whether it be solo artists or groups. We’re inspired by good harmony and great music that moves the listeners.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2016?
Chop: We have a packed schedule for this year. We just did a show in Iowa February 6th. We have Chicago at the end of April and LA in May. Oklahoma City in July and ATL in October. So we’re keeping busy.
Review Fix: How do you want people to be affected by your tunes?
Kal’L: We want people to get the nostalgic feeling they get when they hear songs from the 90’s like Boyz II Men or Avant. That’s the feel we’re aiming for and we’re looking to bring that sound back. The sound of real R&B.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Fourtune: We have a new single called MCM dropping next. It’ll have a visual for it as well. We’ll be shooting the video for it in May when we’re in LA. We’ll be dropping some covers as well just to keep our supporters interested. We’re just gonna make sure to stay busy with shows and in the studio.
