Review Fix Exclusive: Lily Lane Talks ‘Supernatural’ and More

Review Fix chats with singer Lily Lane, who discusses her the creative process behind new single “Supernatural.” Lane also discusses her goals for the future and how her last EP had a massive effect on her sound.

Review Fix: What was the creative process for “Supernatural”?

Lily Lane: I worked with the amazing Scott Jacoby on Supernatural and he had an amazing instrumental he had done with Nikki Gregoroff and thought it was my vibe so when he played it for me I went nuts over it and immediately started writing the melody and lyrics. I knew exactly what I wanted to write it about and it kind of just flowed out of me.  He and I refined that together and had fun playing with the wordplay and keeping the theme of the mystical supernatural eerie almost “spell-on-you” type of love. Once we lay down the vocals we had a ton of fun playing with vocal effects for the ad-libs to make it sound older to pay homage to the retro vibes and Motown songs I adore and was inspired by. Finally, we reworked the track after doing the melody and lyrics to keep my voice the focal point but also because I felt something was missing and couldn’t shake that feeling until Scott and I had the idea to put that amazing lively horn section in the chorus to bring it to the next level.  Then we knew it was done. It was a long process but I wasn’t going to quit until it was perfect, I feel like its kind of my baby.

Review Fix: What do you think is the standout song on the album? Why?

Lane: ”Supernatural” or a song called “Gettin’ over You” which I always loved but was overwhelmed by the response I got when I played it for my friends and team. I was like “wow I’ve really got something here.”

Review Fix: How did “Nothing But Trouble” influence your new album?

Lane: Nothin’ but Trouble was the project on which I really found my sound on, the first thing I released that I could look at it and say, “yep this is who I’m meant to be”. So I kept that vibe but that EP was kind of a downer. It was beautiful but I was in a different not as happy place so not counting remixes there are no upbeat songs on that album. This time I just kind of went for it and most of the songs are happier and upbeat, so I’m the same person with the same sound just a different more positive dance-y feeling now.

Review Fix: What was it like to work with Scott Jacoby?

Lane: Amazing. He’s not only the most incredible producer but he’s an amazing guy and we immediately clicked. I’m a little eccentric but he totally got me from the beginning and loved me for it and brought out the best in me.

Review Fix: How does it feel to get praise from Just Jared, Perez Hilton, CeleBuzz, Nylon, and Teen Vogue?

Lane: Immensely flattering, and excited because if they liked my older music they ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy this album the most?

Lane: Those who have been through tough times and come out stronger, those who are happy or looking for happiness, those who are in love or looking for love, and those who love good meaningful pop or soul.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Lane: The world.
