Review Fix Midtown International Theatre Festival Coverage: Marilyn Recht Talks ‘Three’s A Crowd’

Review Fix chats with playwright Marilyn Recht, who discusses her production “Three’s A Crowd” at this year’s Midtown International Theatre Festival.

About Three’s A Crowd:

THREE’S A CROWD by Marilyn Recht, directed by Emma Roddy; starring Emily Anne Parrish, Dominique Siqueira Woo, and Alexandria Collins. Three young women at a New England college circa 1969 wrestle with desire, societal pressures, and the tensions in their friendship. (Drama) Performance Schedule: Tues 3/22, 8:30pm; Sat 3/26, 5:15pm; Sun 3/27, 7:00pm

Review Fix: What was the inspiration for this project?

Marilyn Recht: I was struck by the idea of what life might have been like for typical college students in the 1960s.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Recht: An idea hits me full force and I finesse the details over a period of time.

Review Fix: What makes this different or special?

Recht: Usually my work is autobiographical but none of the characters in this play is remotely like myself!

Review Fix: What did you learn about yourself through this process?

Recht: I had to enter the experience of three different young women, as they start out and how they are changed by each other.

Review Fix: How does it feel to be a part of something like this?

Recht: It’s very exciting. I’ve always loved collaborative pieces, particularly theatrical work.

Review Fix: What are your ultimate goals for this production and for the future?

Recht: Basically I want the cast and the audience to be stimulated and enjoy themselves.

Review Fix: What do you think your audiences will enjoy the most?

Recht: That it’s a small-scale, character-driven story, set against an interesting point in history.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Recht: I won’t know till it happens.
