Hell’s Kitchen Recap: What Flavor Of Ice Cream?

There’s a horrible stench coming from “Hell’s Kitchen” and it’s from more than one source in a new episode. Not even weird flavored ice cream will get the stench out.

This episode started with an outdoor challenge. Here we saw Marino dressed as a 1950s ice cream man and in an ice cream truck. This is probably the first time the chefs knew that when Ramsay said he’d give the chefs “a little break.” They were right.

The challenge was one of “Hell’s Kitchen’s” staples: the blind taste test. This season, however, the chefs had to taste ice cream and instead of a dunk tank the chefs got sprayed with one of those cannons that fire liquids. Dannie really didn’t’ want any in her hair.

This taste test was a disaster for the Blue Team. Jarred got one, Manda got two and the rest got zero. Some of the best were Manda thinking corn was fish, Frank thinking peanut butter was “Snickers” (yes, “Snickers”) and Ariel thinking green tea was fish (how?) This had to have been the worst showing the Blue Team has ever had.

It goes without saying that the Red Team won. Their reward was a $2000 shopping spree at “Roland’s.” The Blue, on the other hand, had to open up and make a dessert out of durians. Now that is a cruel punishment. Butchering half a cow is easy. Working with durians is like working in a sewer, and there were lots of them! That kitchen must have stunk to high heaven that day.

From one stinker to another, this dinner service started out great but crashed and burned for both kitchens.

In the Red, Kristin was supposed to make three portions of risotto but instead made 2½. She would later bring up green beans instead of asparagus. There’s no way anyone can confuse those two.

In the Blue, it was Frank’s snapper that got things going. He put it in the oven and Manda checked on it and bringing it up when it was undercooked. The same thing happened a while later with Dannie. Jarred had problems with NY strip. His first batch was well done and his second was blue. Not even raw, blue. He even gashed one of them, which is a no-no in every kitchen. Manda added onto the failures with a horrible looking garnish.

Both teams may have finished dinner service, but it was the Blue who had to choose two people for elimination. They chose Frank and Jarred with Frank getting eliminated.

Frank may have been a marine, but he was more Gomer Pyle than R. Lee Ermey. His biggest downfall was his attitude and total disregard to do any team work despite the marines teaching nothing but teamwork. With only six chefs left it’s almost black jacket time.
