Review Fix chats with Benjamin Munoz, who discusses his new single, “Anchors.†Detailing his intro to the genre, as well as his goals for the future as well, Review Fix gets an inside look at the up and coming musician.
Review Fix: What was your introduction to music?
Benjamin Munoz: My introduction to music was somewhat slow. I distinctly remember being put off by music when I was young because I thought there was “too much†of it. When I was ten, my family travelled to Spain to visit relatives. The sister of my Godfather there is the head of the conservatory in Salamanca and a brilliant pianist. Watching her play, I decided I wanted to learn how to play the piano. However, as most kids, I struggled with lessons for years. I was prepared to quit until I came across the music of Debussy. Through Debussy’s music I saw piano and music theory in an entirely different light and haven’t looked back since.
Review Fix: Why does this genre still matter?
Munoz: I’m guessing by genre you’re referring to 2step and garage?… I was never around the scenes that created them, that was two decades ago and far from my hometown. So, I’m not an official on the genres and don’t really feel I could answer that. My motivations for making music in the style of garage and 2step are a bit more personal. I love dance music of all kinds and I find that of all it’s sub-genres, they afford the most flexibility.
Review Fix: How important is social media to your music?
Munoz: For many people, myself included, social media is the only platform for directly sharing music with people around the world. It also allows like-minded artists anywhere, to connect. There are things I dislike about social media but those two reasons outweigh the negative aspects.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Munoz: I’m not sure I can do this question justice, my creative process is kind of amorphous. I feel ideas constantly percolate and that the lines between creativity and everyday life are very much blurred. Mostly, it’s frustration until an idea finally gels in the right way.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Munoz: Well, I’ve only released one song so I suppose the choice is easy. I made ‘Anchors’ while staying with my sister in Vancouver. I was getting into anime at the time, particularly ‘Samurai Champloo’, and I wanted to create something I felt musically reflected that. Also I was very much influenced by the beauty of Vancouver. It’s a very unique city in that it incorporates nature in equal ratio to modernity. I wanted the mood of ‘Anchors’ to reflect that, so I used sounds, progressions and lyrics with Vancouver in mind.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2016?
Munoz: To continue creating and sharing music. To perform wherever people will listen and to meet interesting artists.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Munoz: To be honest I don’t make music with that in mind. My music will affect people the way it will, if at all, and I’m happy with that.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Munoz: I’ll be releasing a single soon and an EP in the spring. Planning to play a few shows in Bristol, where I’m based at the moment, and then back home around Ontario in the summer.
