Review Fix chats with The Black Atlas’ Pete Koronios, who discusses his new EP, “The Master.â€
About Black Atlas:
After having lent his drumming skills to various touring artists and appearances at Warped Tour with Testing for Echo, The Black Atlas was formed by Koronios’ independent vision in 2013. Drawing on the heaviness of Dredg and Queens of the Stone Age, vocal baritone of The National and ethereal qualities of Pink Floyd, The Black Atlas has released two EP’s, The Other and Devils. On the final installment of the Equinox series, The Black Atlas explores the final stages of a conscious transformation of a troubled mind, bringing the conceptual project to a close. The songs were written, arranged and performed by Peter Koronios and the artwork was completed  by Colin Frangicetto (Circa Survive).
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Pete Koronios: The Black Atlas a solo project, and I’ve collaborated with a couple of artists as producers, but the live band was put together in late September of 2014 for a performance at The Bowery Electric in NYC.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this EP?
Koronios: My main goal is to finish telling the story I began telling with the first two EP’s (The Other, Devils). But I’m familiar with the adage, ‘No work of art is ever completed, only abandoned.’
Review Fix: How was “Equinox” written? Is there a story behind it?
Koronios: Some of the lyrics come from a poem I wrote, in a literary magazine I published while in college. Really, it comes from a particular state of mind I was able to attain, which allowed all of these creative projects to develop and blossom.
Review Fix: Is there another standout song on the EP?
Koronios: I’d like to think they all stand out in their own way. There are only three on this particular EP.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
Koronios: Ambient livestock noise.
Review Fix: What makes this album a special one?
Koronios: ‘Equinox’ brings the story full circle and in my eyes, marks the completion of the first stage in this project’s development. I’m very proud of the work as a whole, and I’m excited to share it.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Koronios: We’re in Chicago, so probably pizza.
