Inside ‘The Wild Eight’

National Video Games Examiner Patrick Hickey Jr. chats with Ed Gotovtsev, CEO, 8 Points, who discusses the development process, goals and cool factor for the Diablo-inspired survival RPG “The Wild Eight,” which is currently looking for funds via Kickstarter.

About “The Wild Eight”:

The Wild Eight follows eight individuals who survive a terrible plane crash and now find themselves stranded in the snowy wastes of an Alaskan forest. After waking up in a pile of debris, you must immediately find food and build a makeshift shelter before hypothermia sets in. Surviving this harsh, unfair world is not for the faint of heart. While it might be better to have companions, there’s a traitor in your midst someone who has been driven mad by bloodlust. Will you search for other survivors or try to make it on your own?

About the Developer:

Founded in 2015, 8 Points consists of nine developers making games in one of the strangest and coldest places on Earth: Yakutia, where people eat bears for breakfast, develop games for lunch, and gather firewood for dinner — because electricity is way too expensive. Patrick Hickey Jr.: What was the development cycle like?

Ed Gotovtsev: Our team at 8 Points got together in August 2015 — and we actually spent an entire month trying to come up with ideas! We almost started working on a game about cars, but we soon changed course — realizing that we needed to create a game about our life.

In the winter, we wrote the program base — and we modeled the animals, environment, and quest objects. Now, we’re already almost at the point of sharing a pre-alpha build with the press.
