Having a troubled sibling is something many people deal with. One of the more major behavioral problems in running away. Of course, not that many run away, come back after a few years and say that they spent those years in a magical world. That’s where “Mae†by Gene Ha comes in, and it something to behold.
Mae’s sister Abbie has constantly run away from home. One day she just disappears and reappears years later. She tells Mae that the reason for her disappearance is that she was off in another and now that other has followed her to our world.
The first thing that needs to get out of the way is the title. Why is it called “Mae†when it is really Abbie’s story? Ha may shed light on this is future issues, but for now, it’s a mystery.
Besides that, the story is wonderfully written. The way the events happen and characterization are beyond what is normal for a comic story. This is borderline high fiction writing. Both Mae and Abbie are wonderful characters with well thought out and likable personalities.
The plot is a welcome alternative to a person going into a fantasy land and helping its inhabitants fight evil. This takes place after the fact and in our world. That’s a great idea and Ha has weaved it perfectly.
The art is not like many comics out there. In fact, it’s a little hard to describe. It looks more like an animated cartoon trying to be a comic. It looks nice and all, with the character designs being the best part of the art. It’s just different, and different is a great idea for comic artists.
“Mae†is a different kind of comic with an awesome story, characters and a different kind of art. The title may be a little confusing, but the overall package is wonderful.
