Review Fix chats with Wood Lake’s Rhian Padraic Meaney, Harry Farrell McGuire, Colin Anthony Boudreault about their new single “Hollow.â€
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Rhian Padraic Meaney: Harry and I met in high school and started a band. Our bassist quit, so Harry asked his cousin Colin to join us.
Colin Anthony Boudreault: I had been playing in bands for two years prior to joining Wood Lake. Harry approached me asking if I wanted to work with him and Rhian, and I decided to give it a shot. The rest is gravy. Sweet, sweet gravy.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Harry Farrell McGuire: It varies. Sometimes one of us will bring in a song idea and we’ll all work on it, other times one of us will just bring in an entire song. We have high standards, so we tend to go through a lot of ideas before actually coming up with something we’re all happy with.
Review Fix: How was “Hollow” written? What inspired it?
Boudreault: Hollow was very spontaneous. I had brought in the chord progressions for the intro and verse and we used that as a base for the rest of the song. From there, Harry wrote the vocal melodies within a few minutes in a creative fit, and Rhian came up with the key change at the end. All in all, the song was started and completed in a day.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of the year?
Meaney: We’re gonna be pushing our new album “Hell” like crazy. We’re playing a couple shows in Toronto this April, and we’ll be playing many more in different cities in the coming months. We’re writing a lot of new material too.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone check out this single?
McGuire: It’s a really really good song. If any song on “Hell” can sum up the whole album, it’s Hollow. It’s the kind of song that can give you a religious experience if you listen to it while driving real fast. I’ve probably listened to it more than 400 times since recording it, and it hasn’t gotten the slightest bit stale. How many songs can you say that about?
