Hellboy in Hell #10 Review: Sour Finish

“Hellboy in Hell” is one of the biggest “Hellboy” events Mike Mignola has come up with. It had a lot of great writing, a great Hell and the mythos around it was awesome. The tenth and last issue has been released and the ending is a bit of a letdown.

Hell is in complete disarray, and Hellboy, now in his true form, is out to destroy the last remnants of Hell’s leaders.

What’s meant to be an epic finale to a great story is nothing more than half of the comic giving the backstory of Pluto’s army VS Satan’s army. The other half is a demon narrating what Hellboy is doing. For a comic of this magnitude and Mignola’s talents, this seems like a complete middle finger to the readers wanting a fitting ending.

It’s not like Mignola is capable of writing compelling endings, he’s done it many times in many “Hellboy” stories. Here it just feels empty, anti-climactic and not something Mignola wrote.

The art in this story is great, and David Stewart’s coloring makes this world look excellent. The problem is a lot of it is not on display in this issue. There are a few nice panels, like Hellboy using a lighting attack and shots of Hellboy in his new form, but the rest of the comic isn’t all that interesting to look at.

“Hellboy in Hell” has ended on a sour note. The series overall had some of the best stuff Mignola can throw at us, but the final issue was a major letdown. A back story, a fight that’s not at all interesting and mostly boring panels make this finale not worth looking into. It was a great idea to have Hellboy go through Hell and fight it denizens and it was fun while it lasted, but it should not have to end this way.
