Review Fix chats with Of Clock and Clouds‘ Joe Salgo, who discusses the band’s track “Another Life,”as well as their creative process and goals for the future.
Review Fix:Â How did the band get together?
Joe Salgo: I had written an album’s worth of material and recorded these tracks with a friend of mine. Soon after, Ross and I met at his then current band’s show. After the show we talked and realized that we were both born and raised in Brooklyn- which is a rare thing to find in NYC these days. I asked him if he knew any drummers and he said yes- him.  We’ve been playing together ever since.
Review Fix:Â What are your goals for this album?
Salgo: World domination?
Nah, we’d like for as many people as possible to hear it. We feel very strongly about the songs and the work we put into writing, arranging, producing, tracking and mixing the album. We feel that the vibe and feel of the record will resonate with a lot of people. There’s a little something for everyone on this one.
Review Fix:Â How was “Another Life” written? Is there a story behind it?
Salgo: “Another Life” is a breakup song through and through. Both Ross and I went through very difficult breakups while working on this record, and that is very apparent, in the lyrics especially. Essentially “Another Life” is about being with someone day in and day out and then one day they are completely gone from your life.
Review Fix:Â Is there another standout song on the album?
Salgo: We feel very strongly about all the tracks on Better Off. I would say for me that the song “She Had To Go” is the standout track though. It has this Queens of the Stone Age meets MUSE vibe.
Ross likes the title track because it has this soulful and chill feel.
Review Fix:Â How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
Salgo: For simplification I generally say we’re a psychedelic electronic rock band. If they bite on that, I delve in and say how we’re kind of like the Black Keys meets Radiohead. But that’s really just the tip of the iceberg.
Review Fix:Â What makes this album a special one?
Salgo: This album is a representation of have we’ve grown in terms of collaboration. Many of the songs on the record came directly from these jams that happened between the two of us. So there’s a sense of spontaneity to the songs on this album.
Review Fix:Â What’s next?
Salgo: We are releasing Better Off on July 15. Planning a summer tour. Shooting 2 music videos. And developing new material. The job of an independent artist never stops.
