Review Fix Exclusive: Inside ‘Pirates War: The Dice King’

Review Fix chats with Thiago Oliveira, who discusses the nifty Pirates-infused real-time strategy game, “Pirates War: The Dice King.” Breaking down the inspiration for the game and why you should play it, Oliveira lets us know exactly why it’s for everyone.

Review Fix: What games inspired this one?

Thiago Oliveira: Games like Monopoly, Monkey Island and Hearthstone have inspired us in creating this game. The interesting thing is, other countless strategy/board mobile games inspired us to create this game. There are many strategy games and they are multiplayer but most do not compete with one another in real time. There are many board games on mobile but most are just straight digital ports of their offline version. We wanted to provide a different/unique experiences compared to these games

Review Fix: What has development been like?

Oliveira: Like any startup companies, it started small. We built a prototype and began showing/testing the game. Once core mechanic of the game was built, we began the process of recruiting more developers and game designers. We started adding contents and the game became bigger. Of course, along the way we tested our game to outsiders. A LOT. Especially, the users and other indie developers. We took their feedback and revised/changed the game.

Frankly, it was a hectic process. It was like maneuvering a Pirate Ship. We had one destination but the wind didn’t always blow the way we wanted and there were many obstacles like the Kraken or the navy that we had to overcome.

Last week, we began our Beta Test and received feedback from hundreds of users. We plan to catch bugs and change minor content. We are approaching the final stages of releasing the game.

Review Fix: With all the competition on the mobile market and in the indies now, how difficult was it for you guys to try and make something that stood out?

Oliveira: Thankfully, our game isn’t something that the mobile game industry has been working on. It’s not like the puzzle games or RPGs where there are many varieties to choose from. However, this is a point of view from the creators. We haven’t released the game yet, so it is hard to say if it will really stand out from the gamer’s perspective. Luckily, the response from the beta testers and the community has been great so far. We’re pretty confident that we can innovate in the genre by bring together distinctive genres such as Strategy, Board and Card Collecting Games. The artistic style for our game also stands out as one of its most original characteristics.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why must someone play this game?

Oliveira: Ever played a strategy game that was way too complicated/difficult and didn’t like it? If you enjoyed playing property trading game like Monopoly growing up and you want to see something like that in a mobile game. If you love pirates- Pirates War – The Dice King is the game for you!

Review Fix: How do you want this game to be remembered?

Oliveira: We want Pirates War – The Dice King to be remembered as the game changer. When indie or smaller studios create a game, it’s usually small/simple/single experienced game. Many small studios don’t create its first game where users compete with one another in real time. We want to be the idiots that bashes through that barrier heads first. We want to show the world that a small time studio can achieve miracles as long as you have the heart for it.

Review Fix: What are your goals for this game?

Oliveira: The goal is for it to be a hit, bring as many people to the multiplayer as we can and be remembered as one of the best games out for the mobile platform. We want it to last as long as it may be possible and to build a long lasting, friendly community of players.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Oliveira: The next step after the beta test is finish polishing the game and release it globally on the App Store and Google Play. After that we’ll expand the platforms like PC and other mobile stores, while constantly bringing new content for the existing player base on mobile devices.  Also the game will be cross platform. Meaning all platform users can play with another and users can go back and forth on whatever platform they want to play on.

Review Fix: Anything else you want to say?

Oliveira: We are all about the users. We believe a good game needs fun game mechanics but a long lasting game is built on a strong relationship between the developers and the users. If a developer neglects or does not listen to its user, then the game will dissipate in as short period of time. We at Idiocracy strongly believe this at our core.
