Review Fix Exclusive: Inside ‘Zombie Gunship, Inc.’

Review Fix chats with Borja Guillan, game lead on “Zombie Gunship, Inc.,” who discusses the game’s development, gameplay and future. Building off the success of the previous games in the series, Flare Games’ newest game just might be their best yet, no easy feat after the massive success of “Nonstop Knight.”

Review Fix: What has development been like?

Borja Guillan: We started off last year by focusing on capturing the viscerally satisfying experience found in Zombie Gunship (released in 2011), but ramping up the overall quality even further. We then went to work scaling the game to incorporate a brand new range of weapons, zombies, and environments, which as you can imagine has been a lot of fun!
In addition to that, we’ve added to the apocalyptic feel of the game by allowing players to build a base, which they can develop and defend from the zombie hordes. This base-building aspect is new to the franchise and really adds to the immersive gameplay experience that the developers at Limbic are creating.

Review Fix: What makes this game special?

Guillan: If the zombie apocalypse was real and you had the deadliest range of weapons at your disposal, Zombie Gunship, Inc. is exactly what that would look like. The proprietary FLIR (forward looking infrared) cam visuals bring about levels of immersion and realism never found on mobile before.

We believe the current generation of mobile shooters have failed to deliver that AAA console-grade experience to touchscreen devices: their controls are clunky or the overall quality falls short. Or both. Zombie Gunship, Inc. takes the essence of a great AAA shooter and delivers it for mobile in a way that feels natural and accessible.

Review Fix: How is it different from previous games in the franchise?

Guillan: Our focus is to build more great features on top of the success of the original game. Aside from developing and defending your own airfield (as I have mentioned), the game will boast a much bigger PvE campaign with multiple game modes and scenarios, while this time around you have troops on the ground, with your job being to ensure their survival while they loot zombie-infested locations for valuable resources. And of course we’ve significantly ramped up the number of weapons available to unleash from your AC-130 gunship, which has impacted the amount of work we have invested into ensuring the realistic look of the explosions and the weapons themselves.

Review Fix: Since it’s being billed as a console-quality shooter, any plans for a release on a major console?

Guillan: No, not at the moment. For now, our attention remains completely focused on launching for iOS and Android mobile devices in Q1 2017.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone pick it up once it’s available?

Guillan: We promise a console-grade shooter for mobile that is all about high-definition visuals, intense scenarios, awesome weaponry and a rich, compelling post-apocalyptic world for players to explore and loot. In addition, the game is developed by an award-winning studio and considering the success of their last Zombie Gunship game – it was #1 top grossing and an IGN Editor’s Choice – we can’t wait to see player reactions to this new installment.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Guillan: We will soft launch the game in selected territories in the coming months and make improvements to the experience based on player feedback. From there, we move towards our Q1 2017 worldwide release and start planning some of the cool branding ideas we have for launch!
