Review Fix: How did you get involved in music?
Laura Roy: I always loved music since I was very and music was always blaring on the stereo in my home growing up. I started singing as a kid and by the time I was 12 I was writing poems and little songs. Eventually, I started taking guitar lessons when I was 14 and performing a lot in public!
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
Roy: My music is very much pop/r&b. I perform a lot acoustically as well. My voice is very soul, ‘90s R&B, pop-influenced.
Review Fix: How was “Plastic” written? What inspired it?
Roy: Plastic was actually written in New York City. I traveled there on a writing trip and met with a couple writers, Ari Leff and Michael Matosic. It started with some acoustic guitar chords and me improvising some melodies over top, eventually it turned into a strong verse feel, lyrics started to fall in place, then a chorus but we didn’t have that final line. Our other co-write Michael Matosic joined the session a bit late and heard what we started and said “If were not serious we can’t be tragic, you can’t break a heart that’s made of plastic” and we were like “yes, that’s it”. And that was it!
Review Fix: Who inspires you musically?
Roy: Too many artists. I listen to music from the moment I wake until I go to sleep and all different genres depending on my mood.
Review Fix: What are your long-term goals in music?
Roy: I just hope to always be creating and writing new music, collaborating with new artists, performing live and traveling the world. That’s my dream.
Review Fix: What’s next for you?
Roy: In the next year I plan to travel and play a lot more shows. I am also working on the next couple singles I would like to release and an acoustic style EP with all new songs.
