Review Fix chats with SPiN frontman Eric Rothenheber, who discusses the band’s new EP, “My Hysteria.†Discussing the band’s origin, creative process and goals for the future, Rothenheber lets us know exactly what makes the group and their tunes special.
Review Fix: How did you guys get together?
Eric Rothenheber: Well, Jimmy and I went to high school with Hank’s brother, and Lou… well, Lou may be an alien, no one really knows for sure.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Rothenheber: I imagine it to be very similar to a homeless guy’s creative process.  Sit around, drink and try to think of a way not to be poor. In terms of the writing process, someone comes up with an initial idea and we all wrestle until a SPiN-Worthy song emerges.
Review Fix: What do you think makes this band special?
Rothenheber: You wouldn’t be asking this question if you’d seen a photo of us. Clearly, extreme handsomeness times four is our main selling point. Other than that, I think the fact that we’re friends first and bandmates second creates a unique atmosphere that focuses on the integrity of the music, rather than a corporate-like structure just generating product.
Review Fix: How would you describe your style?
Rothenheber: I think our music can be pretty versatile, but still comes out sounding like “us”.  We have many different influences and try not to pigeon-hole ourselves into always writing in one particular style – we kinda write whatever we want. We have that luxury being a self-produced band, the luxury we don’t have is a major label paying our rent.
Review Fix: What are your goals for this album?
Rothenheber: Same as always – Sell as many copies as it takes to buy 4 Ferraris. Seriously though, we write what we feel and our ultimate goal is always that it will connect with a large audience. We’ve also had previous success in licensing our music to TV/Film and hope to continue that trend with our new releases.
Review Fix: What’s the standout song? Is there a story behind it?
Rothenheber: Probably the title track “My Hysteria†and it’s really inspired by the craziness that is our world in 2016. Is everyone insane, or is it just me? The song tries to explore that mental space both lyrically and musically with it’s intense ups and downs.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Rothenheber: We’re almost done a music video for “Someone New†which will be released shortly, and we’re already deep into the process of releasing another EP.
