Review Fix chats with Singer/songwriter Brooklyn Doran who discusses her second single, “The Villain,†off her upcoming album “These Paper Wings.†Breaking down the inspiration for the track as well as her goals for the future, Doran gives us plenty of reasons to give her music a try.
Review Fix: How was this song written? What inspired it?
Brooklyn Doran: The song “The Villain†was written as a song of strength. I was writing in response to a situation I found myself in where I felt pressured and trapped, and I was frustrated at how many similar stories I’d heard my female friends tell of how we are often put in uncomfortable situations, and then later asked to take full responsibility, when on many occasions what is happening to us is out of our agency and control.
Review Fix: What are your goals for it?
Doran: “The Villain†is the second single from my upcoming album “These Paper Wings†and my goal for this single is for at least one person to listen to it and be able to relate to the stories I am telling, and to come away from listening to the song feeling stronger and more empowered.
Review Fix: How does it differentiate itself from your first single?
Doran: The first single is very calm and lighthearted, and a little more folk oriented whereas this single has a bit more edge to it. Sonically, I think it lives in a darker place and lyrically I feel like it lives in a more complicated place as well.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Doran: I am releasing my album on September 9 and throwing a SICK album release party at The Drake Hotel on September 10th with two amazing Toronto folk acts UKAE and A Fellow Ship.
