Review Fix Exclusive: High Sunday’s Nick Fazekas Talks “Wonderland” And More

Review Fix chats with High Sunday’s Nick Fazekas, who discusses the creative process behind the band’s new single “Wonderland” and upcoming EP.

About the Band:

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, High Sunday bring sizzling energy and a massive hip-hop presence to their debut single, “Wonderland.” The group is an eclectic mix of talents that include Eddie Core, Ike Deezl, Nick Fazekas, Evann Lewis, Nicole Row, Drin Elliot and Ryan Evangelista; who consistently produce a fresh take on the genre by combining elements from Jazz, Rock, Reggae and Funk. They count their influences among Hip-Hop heavyweights like Eminem and Outkast, while incorporating an infusion of rock akin to the likes of Hendrix and The Doors. It’s a sound that rejects typical genre convictions in the pursuit of creating an unforgettable experience.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Nick Fazekas: Me and Ike Williams both started making music together back in 2005 under the group name Enfamus. After 10 years of molding our craft, we moved to LA to be closer to the music scene and decided to form a live band (drums, keys, bass, guitar, saxophone, and lead singer) hip hop experience.  Sometimes it feels like a stroke of luck how we were able to connect with such talents from around the country, in such different situations, and have everyone’s focus aim in the same direction.  We’ve all been together less than a year but it felt like family almost immediately.

Review Fix: What inspired this EP?

Fazekas: This EP is the first official collection of High Sunday music since we became this super band, so we just wanted to make sure that it gave a taste of the range of style and the level of talent that we’re bringing to the table.   We wanted it to be something like you’ve never heard, but can’t stop listening to.

Review Fix: What is your creative process like?

Fazekas: It’s never really one certain process.  There are times when Ike has already produced a track and we just vibe out to it till a song is written.   Other times Nick might have a hook and Ike will get on the keys or guitar and create something off of that. Otherwise, one of the other band mates will come with a riff, a melody, or even just an idea and we all mold around it. Having so many different angles to attack the creative process is what keeps us fresh.

Review Fix: What makes “Wonderland” a special song?

Fazekas: “Wonderland” is special because it reveals the darker side behind the bright lights and this city of dreams.  It’s a  peek at how this lifestyle that people often glamorize is “not exactly as it seems”.

Review Fix: How do you want it to be remembered?

Fazekas: Well…The hook and melody is an instant singalong so people will remember that, but we just want “wonderland” to remind people of the first time they heard High Sunday and knew they were hearing something special. Something that makes them curious and excited for what’s next.

Review Fix: What’s your biggest weakness as a band and how are you working on making it a strength?

Fazekas: Our only weakness as a band is that with so many members, all with side gigs and jobs (for now), we don’t get enough time all being together, whether to rehearse, or create, or even just talk business.  It does strengthen us in the sense that we always have that extra little spark when we do all get to be together because the time is that much more valuable.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Fazekas: Next month we’ll be releasing our 2nd single “Hip-Hip Anonymous” with a video,  and towards the end of November we’ll be releasing our 1st EP.  Then we’ll be hitting the road to introduce ourselves to everyone outside of LA.
