Review Fix chats with The Ballroom Babies’ Steve Colucci, who discusses the band’s single “I Won’t Change.†The band’s first release since leaving their day jobs, it represents their first “moment†as a band.
Review Fix: What was your invitation to the music world like?
Steve Colucci: We used to listen to music in our dad’s old car. He had a cassette player and he would play us tapes of different rock bands – Zeppelin, Yes, Deep Purple, Rush, Grand Funk etc.
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Colucci: The three of us are brothers and we all showed an interest in music at an early age. We all gravitated towards different instruments and naturally we started to jam together. Growing up we were always playing in bands. Sometimes with each other and sometimes with other people. In 2010 we decided to start a trio with all of us singing and trading lead vocals.
Review Fix: Can you discuss how the band has changed your life?
Colucci: The band is our life (haha).
Review Fix: Was it hard to walk away from full-time work for this?
Colucci: No, it was harder to stay. Eventually you have to chose what you really want to do with your life and we all want to play music. So it was a natural progression really.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Colucci: We write the song. Then we rewrite it. Then we write it again. Then we scrap it. Then we rewrite all the words. Then we work out drums and bass. Steve comes up with a lead. Then we hate it and start from scratch, rinse and repeat. It works very well.
Review Fix: How was “I Won’t Change” written?
Colucci: See above (just kidding) Mike presented the riff to the band and we jammed it out for a while. After a few months of hashing the song out, it started to take shape. Eventually words and melody started to creep in and once those were solidified we started to really hone in on the instrumental parts. Working out things like drum and bass grooves, guitar parts, harmonies etc. We made a few tweaks and practiced the hell out of it before heading to the studio.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2016?
Colucci: To write some really great material and play it for a lot of people.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Colucci: Hopefully it affects people in a positive way. We can’t really say how people will react to it. But we hope it makes them happy when they hear it. Or at least feel something.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Colucci: We’re in the process of writing more new material right now. Once we wrap up about 10 songs we’re going to hit the studio again and then head out on the road.
