While iTunes labels Michael Brondstetter’s musical genre as simply “rock,” it is clear from the first second of his song, “Dark Cloud Blues” that he has much more to offer than just that. As the opening number on his eight-song debut album, “Iron Mountain,” “Dark Cloud Blues” is quick to have you tapping your foot and bopping your head along to its catchy and quick beat.
Although his first and only album so far has only come out two years ago, music has been Brondstetter’s passion since he was just four years old. In fact, he first began to show an interest in music as a toddler listening to doo wop. With this song you get a taste of the vast range of genres he notes as inspirations, including blues and folk. You also can hear a bit of the artists he looks up to in his own music, like Stevie Wonder and Ed Sheeran.
If you are usually into rock, blues, country, or Americana, “Dark Cloud Blues” will feed all your musical cravings. With just three verses total, the quick song is nothing but quickly forgotten. The familiar and energetic beat delivered by Brondstetter’s smooth and booming voice and use of guitar will be playing over and over in your head long after the song is done. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself getting out of your seat to dance along once Brondstetter begins singing the lyrics. Each alternating line offers rhyming words that lend to the upbeat tone the song carries.
If you are a big fan of music who appreciates a variety of genres but has not personally delved too deep into the kind of music Brondstetter is known for, it’s safe to say that he will have you coming back for another listen regardless of what your favorite genre is.
