The newest term to define anyone born between 1981 and 1997 is “Millennial.†This is a term that has had a negative intonation because the older generations see millennials in a negative light. Connor Toole and Alec MacDonald decided to have a bit of fun with this by satirizing the bestselling book “Humans of New York†with their new book “Millennials of New York†and it is hilarious.
As with “Humans of New York,†this book has pictures of various people who live in New York and on the bottom of each picture is a blurb where the person pictured says something about themselves. The only difference here is that these blurbs are meant to be outrageous to the point of hilarity. One example is the first photo showing a woman wearing a “Nirvana†t-shirt and she says, “This is my favorite shirt. I love Buddhism.â€
Some of the more outrageous ones aren’t even human. There’s one of a dog and one of a “Big Buck Hunter Pro†arcade machine. Yes, these two examples are the Colonel from “Monty Python†silly, but they are in New York and this is satire so they still count.
This may be satire, but the blurbs do come across as realistic. There are millennials like this which make this book even funnier. From complaining about how much they spend on coffee to receiving money from their parents are the stereotypical things think of when they think of millennials and Toole and MacDonald pull this off perfectly.
To add to the fun, there charts and stats included. Some of these are “Most Popular Religions Among American Millennials†(“Watching Jennifer Lawrence Fall Down†got 70%) and “How to Tell When a Male Millennial is Too Intoxicated.†Some are funny, some just don’t quite hit the spot.
‘Millennials of New York†is an outrageous satire of “Humans of New York†that will cause contagious laughter to anyone who reads it. The blurbs, photos and charts create a great satire of an established work and even speaks to and make fun of an entire generation.
