Review Fix Exclusive: Inside ‘A Story of the End – Revere’

Review Fix chats with Darrel Wijaya, Creator of the indie RPG “A Story of the End – Revere.” [The game currently has a demo out and is available to download via Steam].Breaking down the development process and goals for the franchise, Wijaya lets us know that it’s a special project for him.

Review Fix: When did the initial idea for this game come to you? When did the initial idea for this game come to you?

Darrel Wijaya: I started developing this game since 2015 because I wanted to do something a little different with my life. Seeing that I love the fantasy genre, I decided to tackle it and see where it goes.

Review Fix: What games inspired this one?

Wijaya: A lot of games did.

The Tales series inspired this one most definitely, as well Final Fantasy. As for the dialogue and character atmosphere, I tried to take it from games such as Undertale or Bravely Default. We wanted to do something cute, alongside with something dark.

Review Fix: Why is Troy a special character?

Wijaya: Troy is, at first, quite the typical character. He’s conflicted about his beliefs and worldviews. That’s why his dialogue is a bit stiff as he is not only going through the story for the player, but in a sense, telling the player what he’s thinking and what he’s experiencing.

He’s a troubled man, and because of that, he sets the scene for the story. The more you play through the game, the more you begin to find out who he truly is, and why.

Review Fix: How does this game disrupt the traditional RPG formula?

Wijaya: The typical RPG game has a lot of text and lore, and furthermore tons of characters to meet. I wanted to create a story that keeps it short and simple and not include too many of the common RPG shticks we mostly see.

You can skip random encounters, unleash infinite real-time battles, as well as explore several levels within the game.
It’s a rather different take on RPGs, but we’re trying to make it happen.

Review Fix: What has development been like?

Wijaya: It’s been hell. But eventually, we’ll make it through!

Review Fix: Who do you think will enjoy this game the most?

Wijaya: The RPG crowd for sure. We ourselves are huge fans of the genre. If they want a good story, this is where they’ll find it!

Review Fix: Bottom line, why must someone play this game?

Wijaya: Do you ever want to be in a world where your choices matter more than you think it does? Do you want to meet talking rabbits, a town of tiny chickens and a vast diverse world of all kinds of cultures? All wrapped up in a 2D RPG setting?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then definitely try us out!

Review Fix: How do you want this game to be remembered?

Wijaya: I want this game to be remembered as a meaningful, heartfelt game where people can actually learn something from its story. I also hope that the funny and cuter moments shine through as the gamer progresses through their journey, and that those moments stay with them!
