Review Fix Exclusive: Weesp’s Dmitry Budko Talks Goals and More

Review Fix chats with Weesp’s Dmitry Budko, who discusses the band’s origin, creative process and goals for the future.

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Dmitry Budko: It started from school times. We already were friends, and when some of us started to play instrument, other joined and we created a band. Soon enough we realized that it is more than just a hobby. We started to develop our own sound, playing gigs, recording. The band is more like a family for us now.

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Budko: We usually compose songs together, at the studio. Sometimes it’s fast and inspired. Sometimes it’s pain in the ass with fights and loud swearing. Good thing is that we stay friends despite our opinion often differs. I write lyrics myself, and I glad it is so, can’t imagine other way.

We prefer to go to the studio with pretty much understanding what we are going to do there and what do we want to get. Most of the songs are completely ready before we start recording.

But sometimes we do exclusions. For example we recorded ‘Beware The Blind Spots’ without a single rehearsal. The arrangement was written right before we went to studio, and we gave it a try. It’s one of our favorite songs to play live now.

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Budko: If I have to choose only one – It would be ‘The Void.’ A title song our last album. It is very unusual song. You know, it has one of those straight and yet contradictory mood at the same time. It’s easy to feel and hard to describe. It was a harsh time when we wrote that song.

I can remember clearly the day Mike brought a riff at the rehearsal. All guys found something so special in it at once. Whole band felt it, and the song came out just like that, almost in a couple of hours – all the arrangement, vocals melody, everything! That song didn’t sound like a classic “hit song” or whatever, but it had that special sound… I never could describe it other way then “the void”. That night all of us knew that this is going to be a title song for our first LP album.

We also love ‘solar empire’ featuring Cory Brandan of Norma Jean for, because it’s one of our most powerful songs, and ‘Beware The Blind Sports’ for its atmosphere.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Budko: Well, first of all, we are going to record the second LP album. The material is almost ready, and we plan to start recording in the beginning of spring. The new album is going to be more dark, rough and heavy. I guess we’ll declare the name of this album soon. (It’s awesome.) We plan to release a couple of singles and music videos before the album release, so you can check them out in the middle of 2017 I guess.

We also booking a tour in spring. May be that will be an ‘escape from the studio’ one.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Budko: Music a great way of communication. We believe it can tell you so much more than any words. It’s about feelings and thoughts you can’t describe any other way. And we hope that our music can make our listeners feel the same we did in some periods of our lives. Bands we love and their music changed our lives. Still changing. May be our music can also give somebody strength to move on no matter what, an inspiration to make this world better.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Budko: Now we’re going to the studio to polish the songs before the record, which is going to kick ass. You can also expect other awesome content. Just follow us at social media and stay in touch.
