Review Fix chats with Fero Lux’s Ben Perman who discusses the creative process for the band’s new album and goals for the future.
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Ben Perman: Well, Victor met Dave at the local Food Mart 7 while Dave was wheezin’ the juice. Victor was throwing all the meat products on the flood yelling “meat is fucking murder!” Nick and I were next door at the skating rink re-enacting a scene from Studio 54 for a parody film they were shooting. They all met in the parking lot that afternoon after a truck filled with toxic goo crashed into the plaza turning them all into toxic avenger-esque superhero/”musician” hybrids. And thus, FERO LUX.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Perman: We all write together in a warehouse that we pay money for. Writing is very democratic and we each contribute 1/4 of our own style to our sound. Or, we put ink on our cat’s paws and let them walk on a blank canvas and use that as sort of a tabbing system for rhythms. Then we use the frequency of our dog’s barking to see what key we’ll be in. You decide.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?
Perman: We have a new album called “NO REST.†It’s got 12 songs on it. Everyone we meet seems to tell us what their favorite song is, and it is always a different song than the last person. So check it out!
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?
Perman: To tour. Nothing but tour and finish writing this new record.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Perman: Positively of course. Writing loud music keeps us sane. We’d be crazy people without it. We hope people can express their rage positively when listening to our music. We’re entering a dire time here in America, so we certainly hope everyone who is disheartened by the election and the direction our country is headed in can find a message of positive change in our, or any aggressive bands that are hoping for a bright future.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Perman: We’re touring a lot before the new year, and a lot during the start of the new year. We just got home from an east coast tour with our best friends in Accident Prone from Virginia, and we’re touring Florida this month with Ether. And we’ll be out west for three weeks, most of which will be with The Number Twelve Looks Like You and Stolas. That’s what is next and we’re very excited about it.
