Review Fix chats with Patrick Twohig, Studio Head at Namazu Studios, who discusses the VR version of their recent PS4 game, “Nebulous.â€
About Nebulous:
By aligning gravity altering machines, conveyor belts and other gadgets to guide our hero through physics-based mazes filled with deadly traps, players can bounce the astronaut through stages like a pinball as they hear his quick-witted insults and discover a route to each exit.
Review Fix: How is the VR version of Nebulous different from the regular PlayStation version?
Patrick Twohig: With the VR version of the game, the controls are different. The player can play the game by just looking around. If you hold your gaze on objects in the puzzle, they become selected and can be moved. It makes for a really immersive experience.
Review Fix: What was the development like for the VR version?
Twohig: The game was originally conceived for VR, so development on it was happening concurrently. We did add PSVR support later, but that was just a matter of optimizing the game for the best possible experience on the hardware.
Review Fix: How do you want this game to stand out?
Twohig: We hope people like the control scheme for VR, find it to be an immersive and challenging experience, and find the humor in the game funny.

Review Fix: What was the original reception like for the game and how did it benefit the VR version?
Twohig: We heard comments on the original release along the lines of “Nebulous feels like a VR game.†Since VR was the original focus, it made us feel like we were on the right track.

Review Fix: How do you want the VR version to be remembered?
Twohig: We’d like the VR version to be remembered as the definitive version of the game.
Review Fix: What’s next for Namazu Studios?
Twohig: We can’t offer any details, but our next game is an action game that retro gamers may appreciate.
