Review Fix chats with StarBenders’ Kimi Shelter, who discusses the band’s origin and goals for the future.
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Kimi Shelter: Katie and I have known one another since we were teenagers. Aaron and I used to play in another band and stuck with one another once it fell apart. We had strong chemistry and wanted to carry on together. Ran into Kriss when he was playing a house party. My mind was blown and I told him we had to have him in the band and that was that.
Review Fix: What makes your brand special?
Shelter: The rock scene for the last few decades has been a patriarchy. StarBenders is androgynous naturally and we have fun with our visual aesthetic. We consider our music to be pop and aren’t afraid of that word.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Shelter: I build the skeleton of the songs and the band brings in the meat.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song on the album How was it written?
Shelter: Down and Out is an apocalyptic pop song. You’re being told that everything will be all right while the world is on fire. This is what people who are tuned in and turned on face.  Being a creature of love has left you exiled while those bent on evil descend upon your heart like vultures. Our freedom is found within dreams.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?
Shelter: To live in love and health. We want StarBenders on the road full time, keep working on new music and videos, and continue bringing a little bit of light into an otherwise dark world.
Review Fix: What makes your latest album special?
Shelter: Our record, ‘Heavy Petting’ came out in May 2016 and was our first full length. We had only been a band for 2 years, so it was really exciting to move so quickly and creatively. The record has a variety flavors and we are proud of it.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Shelter: We want you to move and shake. We want to grow up with you. We’re with you.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Shelter: Touring, recording, filming more videos.
