Savage #1 Review: Great

Getting stranded on a deserted island is already bad enough, but add in dinosaurs and the stakes jump to eleven. That’s the scene to B. Clay Moore’s “Savage” with art by Clayton Henry and Lewis Larosa. The first issue sets up the comic to be one great series.

Kevin and Ronnie Sauvage, along with their son KJ, crash land on a deserted island on their way to America. Now they have to find a way off of the island or find some sign of civilization on it.

The problem with this first issue is that we already know the adults die because we see KJ as an adult fighting a dinosaur in the first few pages, meaning there’s no tension. Even with that, it’s nice to see what happened to KJ’s parents and what led up to him fending for himself. In fact, the next few issues featuring backstory may even be interesting and have some tension.

The minor nitpick here is the name, Sauvage. The characters’ name is Sauvage and the series is called “Savage.” That’s about as corny as you can get without needed to do any husking.

The artwork shows a lot of skill was involved in drawing the comic. The character designs are spot on, the beach where the family lands look awesome and the action scenes are also nicely drawn. While the dinosaur shown here looks excellent, it kinda seems off. The one at the beginning looks like a T-rex, but is the same size as a human. There’s also no way that is a velociraptor because the head is too close to a T-rex’s.

The first issue of “Savage” may not have much tension and some questionable designs, it’s still has a great story and art that makes you forgive these minor nitpicks. The story does seem like it could get better, making this a possible candidate for one of Valiant’s best series.
