Slayer: Repentless #1 Review: Amazing

One of the greatest thrash metal bands ever is “Slayer.” They are one of the pioneers of the genre and have a loyal fanbase to this very day. One brilliant idea they had was to come up with a comic with writer Jon Schnepp and artists Guiu Villanova and Mauricio Wallace called “Slayer: Repentles” and the first issue is amazing.

Two brothers, Adrian and Wyatt, become members of a Nazi group after their parents died. However, Wyatt decides to change his ways and even gets a black girlfriend. Since this is considered treason in their group, Adrian is doing everything he can to get Wyatt killed.

This is the type of comic you’d expect from “Slayer,” it is violent, gory, has foul language and is fast paced. This is the type of story that grabs you from the first panel and makes you want to continue the series.

Of course, there are those who say that this story is nothing more than just violence for the sake of violence. That’s not true. Here, there is a point to the violence albeit one that is meant to teach a lesson. The thing about this lesson is that it’s done in a way that is scarily realistic. There are groups that are this violent and are willing to kill for their cause. The story doesn’t shove it down your throat, which works in its favor.

The art isn’t as great as the story. The characters do look OK, but there are many panels where they are not that detailed. The violent scenes do the job of making you feel what’s going on and even make you flinch. The amount of blood shown will make some people look away because there are times where it looks real.

“Slayer: Repentless” is the “Slayer” comic fans have come to expect. It is fast, hard-hitting and takes no prisoners. The art may not have the same quality, but the story will more than enough make anyone, fans, and non-fans, want to see what happens next.
