Los Angeles, CA – May 5, 2017 – S.O.G. Crew Hip Hop front man Dr. Robert “Battle Ax” Ornelas has been selected as an honoree and recipient of the 2017 RMPA Music Awards Social Justice Award that will take place on Saturday May 20th at the Highlands Masonic Events Center in Denver, CO. The Rocky Mountain Promoters Association/La Familia Ministry Denver and the RMPA 2017 Music and Social Justice Award’s team take great pleasure to formally inform the general public of their awards presentations and National All-Star show featuring the MALO Anthology Concert showcase.
The RMPA Music Awards program is an expansion of an RMPA recognition awards program that started in Denver circa 1995. The awards effort embodies culture, tradition, and the spirit of community as its platform and as of 2016, their criteria was expanded to include community efforts and accomplishments relative to an individual’s involvement and contributions made through community and faith pursuits.
“Since day one our collective goal was to reach our families using our gift of Hip Hop music that God blessed us with. Every member of our team back then came from the streets and urban communities of Southern California. Most of my family was involved in gangs, drugs and prisons. Johnny Diaz the Revolutionary became a member of our Crew a little after gang rivals shot up his house in San Diego. We were a young group of people that were tired of the social issues that our own generation faced. As our ministry, music and movement grew we operated as anthropologists studying the development of cultures all over the country. Keep in mind that we were always a Hip Hop Crew. To the Christian community we were a Gospel Hip Hop group, while the Secular community saw us as an underground political Hip Hop movement.Â
Â
We were always big on giving back to our local community of Anaheim, CA. We would feed the homeless and prostitutes, visiting homeless shelters while involved in community outreaches. In our early years the doors to Mexico opened to us giving us the opportunity to visit prison inmates and many villages throughout Baja, California Mexico. By being faithful to the work in Mexico, God opened up every single Native American community in the United States. We became suicide, gang and drug advocates in every major city visiting communities, jails and prisons. Our team has visited Alaska, Hawaii and most places experiencing social disorder. Our goal has always been to give back to the people by producing the best quality music and by being examples to the young people.Â
Â
I dedicate this award to my wife Melissa, my children, Johnny Diaz, Yvette Aranda, Dez Lewis, Lezette Garza, Krista Rocha, Little Victor Ornelas, Corina “DJ Siren” Gonzalez, J Biz, Arlene Lambert, J5, Little Battle Ax, Hapizzez Jef, Ruby Martinez, Esther Escobedo, Justin DeWolfe, Candy Sandy, Christian PapaRotzee Jr. and everyone that has ever been part of our Sons of God team. This Social Justice Award is a reminder of what a group of young people can do to give back to society for over two decades. This experience that we have all gained is priceless and we are excited to impart this knowledge to students for a long time to come,” stated Dr. Robert “Battle Ax” Ornelas
RMPA Awards Objective and Criteria: To recognize and celebrate national, regional, and local musical artists, educators, and community leaders who have distinguished themselves as legacy artists and/or contributors to the performing arts and community service over 25 to 35 years through their music careers and the career related contributions they have made in providing an environment of opportunity for those that followed them or who have benefited from their work and contributions. This will also take into consideration the contributions made by artists and leaders supporting their own communities over the years at a grass roots community and faith level.
“The criteria is fairly simple, however, can only be met at a true standard. Accordingly, it is an honor for us to make this effort in honoring your work, your accomplishments, and the contributions you’ve made to the lives of people through your music as well as to recognize and honor you in the area of faith as a Gospel artist, leader, and minister who has, with great integrity, given freely to so many in the name of advancing the Lord’s work in outreach ministry and Christian service. We honor and thank you for your continuing contributions and for your faithfulness in not forgetting where you came from through your community work as well as your personal sacrifice in service to the Lord,” said Director Angel Barrientos - Rocky Mountain Promoters Association
