Guardians of the Galaxy 1000 Dot to Dot Book Review: A Gateway to More Marvel

The Guardians of the Galaxy as a franchise have been successful films and have an animation based on these Marvel characters. They have also appeared in videogames as individual characters and have a roleplaying one as well. But before that they were comic books with a rotating roster. In the activity book based on the 2008 incarnation of this team ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: 1000 Dot-to-Dot’ is a series of portraits illustrated by Thomas Pavitte based on artwork from other artists in the Marvel universe. When each dot is connected art is created, which you can color in and hang on your wall. There are built bookmarks to help you keep your place. Also, each set of dots are color coded so you don’t get lost. The only setback is that the numbers you rely on to make your creations are miniscule. You may need a magnifying glass to help you along the way.

If you don’t know where you’re going there’s no need to look up what you think the pictures should look like. They are all fully drawn out at the end of the book. What makes this work interesting is that it isn’t a mindless way to waste your time. Instead it takes concentration and the ability to follow directions to help you figure the puzzles out.

What’s more, don’t think that because the answers are in the back that this won’t be enjoyable. Each portrait is in black and white so you have the chance to color in the pictures however you want. And if you’re thinking of giving this as a gift an appropriate age group may start at eight years old. But you will most likely want to keep this for yourself.

Overall, as with any activity book there is much more than simply connecting the dots. Try looking up each of the characters. Find out what their relationships to each other are. Characters such as Drax the Destroyer and the Collector are drawn differently than how they appear in the film. Learn about Cosmo, or Thanos’ relationship with the Guardians. It isn’t all about the infinity stones. Essentially exploring this work just may lead you to exploring more of the Marvel universe.
