Review Fix chats with Diana DeMuth who discusses her new album The Doorway and how her appearance on the X Factor helped her develop as a musician.
About Diana DeMuth:Â
A driven 20-something singer/songwriter from Concord, Massachusetts who is ready to leave her mark on the music industry, Diana DeMuth is a storyteller whose thoughtful lyrics create endearing and compelling narratives that she brings to life with an earthy voice, mature beyond her years. The music allows her to bare her soul through stories of the complexities of the heart and mind, resulting in a soft rock sound that has a charming folky twist.
DeMuth recently gathered some of the most promising young female musicians in LA to form The Diana DeMuth Band. This exceptionally talented all-female group is a breath of fresh air for the music industry; every musician in the band has a star-studded resume to prove it. The band is currently working to release their first EP, titled The Doorway, due out late this summer.
DeMuth started writing songs in fifth-grade thanks to the encouragement from her guitar teacher and hasn’t stopped since. She recorded her first EP at only fourteen years old.
Although she never talks about it, DeMuth was a 2013 contestant on Simon Cowell’s The X Factor. On a whim during a layover in Colorado, DeMuth auditioned for the show eventually making it through to the celebrity judges round in front of Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, and Kelly Rowland and into the top thirty. DeMuth, being anything but a cover artist, ultimately decided that the show’s vibe didn’t click with her singer/songwriter soul.
During her sophomore year of college, DeMuth’s free spirit and creativity felt too stifled, and she decided to leave to dedicate herself fully to pursuing her dream. Her priority was to write an album from start to finish and release it on her own, a project called “Albuquerque,†which became her debut album. The past few months all of her efforts have been working towards the release The Doorway EP with her incredible new full band.
Review Fix: What inspired The Doorway?
Diana DeMuth: The Doorway was written about my two best friends. The three of us grew up on the same street for thirteen years and the song is a recollection of that experience as well as what it was like to move away and come back. It recalls my last summer at home before leaving when I was 18. Something about late July of that year has always stuck with me.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
DeMuth: I edit as I go. Most people say that’s not a good idea but I can’t help it. If I don’t like something I’ll throw it out and start over. I’ll come up with a vocal melody while I’m driving or doing laundry and then I sit down with my guitar and write. Sometimes I write a lyric or a melody that I come back to later on when I have a better idea of what I’m trying to convey. More recently I’ve been gathering specific words and images to try to create a mood for a song and then go from there. The process grows as I grow.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
DeMuth: I’d say it’s Folk/Rock. It has country influences as well as pop ones. More than anything though it’s about the story. If you like listening to lyrics you’ll like it.
Review Fix: What song on this album has the best story behind it?
DeMuth: I would say Take Me, the last song. I was in love with someone (a bit unrequited) and it’s about a dream I had. That’s how the song started. After that it was more of an admission. It turned from being a song about somebody else to being a song about myself. The chorus line is “Take me in your arms, I was good once”. It’s about the acceptance and love I was craving from someone else and how it was something I needed to give to myself.
Review Fix: What did you learn from the X-Factor?
DeMuth: That I never want to be on another reality TV show. EVER.
Review Fix: What’s next for you?
DeMuth: I just wrapped a full-length album so playing live as much as possible.
That’s what I love to do and I have an amazing band I’ve been playing with since I moved out here. I think live performance is where it’s at.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
DeMuth: Check out my new single ‘The Doorway’ on Spotify and Apple Music! Much more to come.
