Review Fix Exclusive: Different Light’s Trevor Tabone Talks ‘In Love And War’ And More

Review Fix chats with Different Light’s Trevor Tabone who discusses the band’s origin, creative process and goals for the future, as well as their standout song “In Love And War.”

Review Fix: How did the band get together?

Trevor Tabone: The band originated in Malta in 1995 when I (Trevor) formed the band with 3 friends. I then moved to Prague in 1999 and reformed the band a bit later going through a few different line-ups, the present one being: Trevor Tabone (keyboards, vocals), Jirka Matousek (bass), Petr Matousek (drums), Petr Lux (guitars, backing vocals) and Petr Kania (live guitar).

Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?

Tabone: I usually write and arrange the music and then present some basically recorded demos to the band. We then rehearse the music and change or rearrange bits when we feel it’s needed. We go into the studio with the songs practically completed and record more or less 100% of what we’ve already done

Review Fix: What’s your standout song? How was it written?

Tabone: I would say it’s “In Love and War” from our last album “The Burden of Paradise.” It’s divided into two parts and the first part is a mix of a very old bit plus a completely new bit I had written. The second part is an old song I had written which has a few new arrangements added to it and the whole thing together works really well.

Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?

Tabone: I’ve just finished writing a new album, so we want to start recording that plus we should be playing a few live dates, hopefully even out of the Czech Republic.

Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?

Tabone: I think the whole point in creating music is for people to be emotionally affected by what you’ve created and hopefully be able to relate the lyrics to their own circumstances.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Tabone: The recording of our new album, which will be even better than the last.
