Review Fix chats with Night Drive’s Brandon Duhon. who discusses the inspiration, goals and creative process behind the group’s debut LP.
About Late Night Drive:
Lots of eyes on this Austin/Houston based duo who also like to collect Sherlock Holmes radio programs from the 1930s and research Ancient Egyptian artifacts – their album has garnered attention from the likes of Paper, Spin, Billboard, Electronic Musician and more, plus they have hit the top of the HypeMachine charts several times in the last few weeks and had Classixx officially remix their lead track, “Rise and Fall.â€
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Brandon Duhon: We met through a mutual acquaintance and immediately hit it off. We had similar tastes in art and music and decided to try out a project together. On our very first day writing together we wrote “No Plans” which is on our first EP.
Review Fix: What makes you guys unique?
Duhon: Besides the fact that we’re largely inspired by film and artistic mediums other than music, we also have a rudimentary secret language that we use to talk to one another when we don’t want onlookers to understand us.
Review Fix: What groups inspire you?
Duhon: Our musical inspirations span the decades. From Scott Walker to Tangerine Dream to Erik Satie to Cut Copy.
Review Fix: What makes this LP special?
Duhon: One unique aspect is that we do the entirety of the mixing and production ourselves. No one else hears the songs until they are complete and we send them out for mastering. This might be common with bands that are entirely electronic, but since we incorporate live guitar and bass, as well as live percussion, it’s a little more of a rarity. We want the vision to be entirely ours.
Review Fix: How was this LP written?
Duhon: Rodney tends to handle the bulk of the vocal composition and I tend to handle the bulk of the musical composition. But once the parts are there and we’re in the studio, the mixing and arranging process is 100% a collaborative effort.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Duhon: In July we have a tour on the west coast, and hopefully a tour overseas in the near future.
