Review Fix chats with Crane’s Bobby Crane, who discusses his first EP and more. Breaking down his creative process and goals for the future, Crane lets us know exactly what he wants to accomplish in music.
Review Fix: How’d you get involved in music?
Bobby Crane: If you’re asking about when I first started to enjoy music and bang on a drum set. It was probably around 6 years old! If you’re talking about when did I first take the leap of becoming a professional artist, then I would have to say about a year and a half ago. I always messed around making beats, playing piano/guitar/and drums, but never took it serious until I realized I was actually making stuff that I believed was worth letting other people hear. I was hesitant about it, but I am so glad I moved forward with it.
Review Fix: Who influences your sound the most?
Crane: My biggest influences will always be past artists that have tailored my love for music today. However, there’s also current artists that I believe are doing amazing things and they definitely motivate me to put out my best work possible. If I had to narrow them down to a few oldies and few modern, I would say… Coldplay, Stone Temple Pilots, RHCP, The Cure, Sugar Ray, Tom Petty, Third Eye Blind, Limp Bizkit, Chainsmokers, Jon Bellion, The 1975, Eric Church, and I’m certain there are a million more!
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Crane: My process is very solo driven. I prefer to be at a computer, have logic open with my midi keyboard connected, and I’ll usually just dabble around until I find a progression or rhythm I love. Next, I’ll start singing aloud over it until I find something that catches my own attention. Then I create some drums, and layer after layer…a song is born. Doesn’t mean it always ends up being a winner, but that’s how I usually go about it.
Review Fix: What makes your new EP special?
Crane: What makes it special to me is that it is my first EP. It embodies my first completion of a project that I thought would never be finished. Sounds cheesy, but it meant a lot to me to do that. On a broader scale, I feel our EP is special because we managed to cross over multiple genres into one EP, and I believe we did it pretty well. For example, most people that review it tend to love a different song on it than the next. We really didn’t limit our EP behind one central song which allowed for the listener to find their own favorite.
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before?
Crane: I would say that our sound is Alternative music that definitely swims through today’s pop sounds. Some are bangers, and some are sentimental, but there’s definitely a dark and heavy texture to the sounds.
Review Fix: Bottom line, why should someone buy it?
Crane: Great question. Buying our EP is the ultimate way to support CRANE in continuing to make creative music projects. But let’s assume you don’t care about supporting artists, then you should buy it because the EP is something anyone can relate to. The general them of broken hearts, and toxic relationships is something that everyone of us goes through, and this music was my medicine through my trial, so let it be yours.
Review Fix: What are your goals for the rest of the year?
Crane: Our goals for the remainder of the year are to finish three more music videos, release a Cover Song EP of songs we’ve completely reimagined and reworked, and to play many more shows so we can meet the people that share in our love for this type of music.
Review Fix: What do you feel you have to do to make your dreams in music come true?
Crane: The most important thing you have to do in order to make your dreams come true is to be persistent and consistent. You need make sure that on your low days, that you won’t give up, and that no matter what you’ll keep creating and putting content out there. It’s impossible to brand, or be heard if you’re not getting out there.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Crane: What’s next for us on top of our goals of creating content, is that we are releasing some really amazing songs that were co-written with some amazing artists. One song to definitely look out for is “Evilâ€, which I co-wrote with artist Kyle Reynolds. The song should be released in late September and it’s honestly what I am excited about most.
