Review Fix chats with Exoaura’s Adam Ingram and Lindsey Church who discuss the band’s origin, creative process and future.
Review Fix: How did the band get together?
Lindsey: Both of us hail from the nu-metal band Reflection. We’ve been writing and performing music together since 2004 and have always had this undeniable chemistry together. We both have different styles, but share a common love for metal, so we decided to blend our styles to form the alternative-metal duo, Exoaura.
Review Fix: What is your creative process like?
Adam: It all depends on my inspiration and mood at the time but typically, I’ll start a drum pattern, plug in my Warwick to start laying down the groove and vibe of the song. From there I’ll load up my guitar chain and start adding layers, from accents and effects to strong melodic riffs. This is where it starts to take shape and I prepare for the orchestration and vocal arrangements from Lindsey.
Lindsey: I have a notebook of poetry that I’m constantly writing and working on. When I hear what Adam has started on, something will just click and I’ll know straight away which poem I want to turn into lyrics for it. From there I let the emotion of the song guide my edits/changes/add-ons. I’ll usually get inspiration for piano parts from there, then the rest is history.
Review Fix: What’s your stand out song? How was it written?
Adam: “Infamy†definitely. It came together so fast and is full of energy and emotion. Like most of our material, it started with that thick, crunchy bass groove, then I wrote the low guitars to follow the progression, added some orchestration sent it to Lindsey. Magically, she already had lyrics that matches the energy of this song perfectly. We collaborated on the symphonic breakdown, then had it fully tracked in less than a week!
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2017?
Lindsey: Our debut self-titled EP just released and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it! We’re also doing merch giveaways, live in the studio performances and covers, so we’ll keep our fans posted on all of it.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Lindsey: I want it to make people feel and connect. The world is terribly divided by fear, but there are people strong enough to rise above it. I want people to draw strength from what I write.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Adam: Besides our debut release, we’re doing a cover of Karnivool’s “Synops.” We’re also already writing our sophomore album, which will have an even darker heavier side and an even lighter melodic side than our EP does. So, we’re going to continue to push those boundaries and make our sound even more dynamic.
