The Evil Within The Interlude #1 Review: Worthy of the Game And More

The video game “The Evil Within” was one of those sleeper hits that has garnered a huge following. Considered to be one of the best horror games of 2014, a sequel was the next logical course. Like “Mirror’s Edge,” there is a comic adaptation that sets up the plot to the sequel called “The Interlude” by Ryan O’Sullivan with art by Szymon Kudranski and Damien Worm. The comic itself is a nice setup.

Taking place after the first game, Sebastian is investigating a new killer and is also searching for his missing daughter, Lily. Like last time, this case has Sebastian locking horns with monsters that have something to do with the killer.

The plot may have elements of “Silent Hill 1” combined with the plot of the first game, but there’s always a chance that this could go in a crazy, unforeseen direction. The story for the first game was downright nuts with plenty of things that scared the gamer half to death or cringe. While the scares aren’t on full display here, the monsters from the previous game are which should give fans something to look forward to.

The artwork is downright amazing. The artists understand that in order to make something as crazy scary as “The Evil Within” you have to make everything dark and gritty. Some of the best artwork is when Sebastian and his shrink are walking outside a bunch of panels that show what happened in the first game. Another one is a two-page spread showing Sebastian investigating the first murder scene and it’s just the entire area with panels drawn on to show action. It’s an amazing technique that’s rarely used.

“The Evil Within The Interlude” nicely sets up the story for the sequel even though the scares aren’t all there. It’s still an interesting story and does make the reader want to play the game. Combine fantastic artwork and you have one of the best video game tie-in comics ever.
