Review Fix Exclusive: Down And Outlaws Peter Danzig Talks ‘Bad Radio’

Review Fix chats with Down And Outlaws’ Peter Danzig who discusses the band’s new project, “Bad Radio.”

About Down And Outlaws:

Already making waves nationally, with appearances on Last Call with Carson Daly and at Outside Lands Festival, soundtrack cameos on Oliver Stone’s Snowden and the Ubisoft game, Watch Dogs 2 and rave reviews from local and national media, Down and Outlaws are hungry for more opportunities.

Review Fix: What makes this album special?

Peter Danzig: I think ‘Bad Radio’ is a bit of a turning point for us. We’ve been a band long enough that the music we’re currently writing finally feels like it could only be a product of the four of us. Finding a ‘sound’ as a band can take time and I think you have to let go of a lot of other people’s opinions about what you’re supposed to be doing to get there. I know we’ll only develop and grow as time goes on, but ‘Bad Radio’ feels like it’s ours. That makes it special to me.

Review Fix: What track are you most proud of?

Danzig: ‘Imposter’ is probably the track I’m most proud of. Reason being because we wrote it differently than we do most songs. We stopped worrying so much about needing to pile on new parts or chord changes just for the sake of having them. We let go of some of the unspoken songwriting rules I think we tend to default to. The song ended up just flowing naturally and leaving room for a story to be told.

Review Fix: Is there a story behind it?

Danzig: It’s about constantly comparing yourself to your idols/people you look up to and losing sight of who you truly are. The way the music is laid out and flows allowed for a nice canvas for the narrative.

Review Fix: What are the goals with this album?

Danzig: As a band, we wanted a short and sweet representation of who we are with absolutely no filler. I think it gets the point across and hopefully will keep people wanting more.

Review Fix: Bands often give their albums nicknames, like the Eagles call “The Long Run,” “The Long One,” because of all the time they spent in the studio on it. What would you guys nickname this one?

Danzig: How about ‘I know our name is Down and Outlaws but please believe me…we’re not a western band.’

Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?

Danzig: ‘Anti-anxiety medicine with a small side effect of anxiety’ rock.

Review Fix: Bottom line, why must someone listen to this album?

Danzig: I think you can release a lot of your stresses through listening to ‘Bad Radio.’ That’s what it does for me. And at the very least, you will rock the hell out.

Review Fix: What’s next?

Danzig: We will be recording more music soon and playing shows across the west coast/southwest within the next year. Other than that…we’ll see what happens

Review Fix: Anything you’d like to add?

Danzig: Keep dreaming.
