Review Fix chats with singer/songwriter Corina Corina, who discusses her new album, “Hangover Music,†as well as her origins in music and creative process.
Review Fix: How did you get started in music?
Corina Corina: I’ve always known I was a singer. I started taking voice lessons and performing in high school. I got a degree in jazz and world music vocal performance and moved to NYC 11 years ago to peruse it. It’s my thing.
Review Fix: What’s your creative process like?
Corina: I think creativity comes and goes. Like a lot of artists, I create more in high drama, high pressure situations like breakups and deep bouts of depression. I’m always inspired by true life and my very active imagination. I do really well with deadlines, if there’s a project that needs to get done I can bang out a lot of content. If not, I go for long periods of time without writing a song which is a little tragic but that’s just how it goes for me.
Review Fix: What’s your standout song on the current album? How was it written?
Corina: So many. I am so proud of “Hangover Music!†I will say that “Blue pt. II†is my favorite song I’ve ever written. The whole album’s concept is an exploration of my relationship with alcohol and that song is the turning point. It’s kind of like a breakup song, me realizing how much of my life I’ve given to this lover (in my case, tequila) and wondering if it was all in vain. Socially, it has a 12 Bar blues structure, some badass horns and me pouring my heart out. What more could I ask for in a song?
Review Fix: What did you learn from this last album? How did it affect your future?

Corina: My producer, Willie Green and I have done 3 albums together. This one was different than my other two for a few reasons- we have no outside production and no features. It was created from he and I locked in a room together for long periods of time. I shared my ideas and heavy life experiences and the two of us created this beautiful, honest project together. A lot of it was really far out of my comfort zone but I dug deep. I was touring full time for most of the recording so in between our time together I would test the songs on the road. It was the first time I’ve ever done that and it was an incredible experience.
Review Fix: What are your goals for 2018?
Corina: To finally put this album out! I dropped the first single (“BAR$â€) in January and this month the video is out. I’ll put out the second single and video soon and then this summer I’ll release the album. In between all those things, my other project, Max Caddy is releasing an ep. We do acoustic blues and folk music. It’s pretty different than Corina Corina but my partner, Jesse O’Neill and I work together on everything. He’s the one playing guitar on “BAR$.†Other than that this year I’ll try to fit a little fun, rest and spiritual grown into my busy ass life!
Review Fix: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you?
Corina: Lyrically driven alternative R&B. But even that mouthful of words doesn’t full encapsulate it. This is a struggle for most artists.
Review Fix: How do you want your music to affect people?
Corina: I want people to feel free. Freedom from depression and mental oppression, freedom to be who they are and to be transparent about what they’re going through. That’s what I strive to achieve every day and what I wish for everyone else.
Review Fix: Why is this new album special?
Corina: Because it’s a conceptual exploration of my relationship with alcohol. I’ve never seen another artist do it in this way and although it’s deeply personal, I think a lot of people will be able to relate as well. Within the overall narrative, there are themes of loneliness, regret and also triumph and overall not giving a fuck. It’s empowering and the songs are damn good.
Review Fix: What’s next?
Corina: Executing the release of “Hangover Music†and onto the next creative endeavor!
