Review Fix chats with writer Connor McCreery, who discusses his new Adventure Time/Regular Show graphic novel, detailing the creation process, audience and more.
About Adventure Time X Regular Show:
When a powerful new villain threatens to conquer Ooo, Princess Bubblegum sends Finn and Jake on a desperate quest to find The Power that can save the land –a power that Skips from Regular Show just happens to be hiding!
But with tensions running high between Adventure Time’s besties AND Regular Show’s Mordecai and Rigby, this cross-over threatens to be more of an undoing.
It’s a ‘Battle of the Bros’ that could end up K.O.ing two worlds!
Review Fix: These are two super respected franchises. Any pressure working with them?
Connor McCreery: Oh, definitely. When there are rabid fan-bases, you want to make sure you respect them. When you deal with TWO of those fan-bases. well…. it gets a LITTLE crazy. Thankfully, all the feedback I’ve received from fans has been really supportive. I think the cross-over was one of those ideas that people didn’t really see coming, but once they thought about it, they went: “huh, that actually makes a lot of sense.”
Review Fix: How did it feel to create a new character in this world?
McCreery: I loved it. When I worked on Assassin’s Creed with Anthony Del Col, we were most proud of bringing a new hero into that world. This time I got a chance to go indulge my dark side, by bringing in, what I hope will feel like an iconic villain. I was sad though that I had to “kill” a minor character I wanted to introduce in issue #1. We just ran out of room. But have no fear, Hatey Von Hatenstein DID make his official Adventure Time appearance in issue # 74 (which I got a chance to script as well.)
Review Fix: Who are your favorite characters in both franchises? Why?
McCreery: Oh man…. alright…. this is a toughie. You’re not going to tell anyone else, right? I think, if I had to just pick ONE…. in Adventure Time it’d be Jake. I love characters that act with no real sense of consequence, but have a good heart (although a close second would be Ice King – especially now that he’s not so princess-kidnapping focused.) Ooh, ooh, and I love Bubblegum. Ruthless AND caring? Sign me up!)
In Regular Show, I have a real soft spot for EIleen – I wanted to get her into this book, but I just couldn’t make it work. Celia ended up becoming something of a stand-in for her, and I was proud to get to shine a spotlight on her. Of course I love Pops, again, I love me some tender hearts…. and then maybe the Geese? Birds that kick butt, are also a personal favourite of mine.
Review Fix: Do you think these stories can attract new fans to both franchises?
McCreery: For sure. I may be, hugely, biased, but I think there is no reason you won’t love this if you are fans of either franchise. It has everything you want. Adventure, punchies, Rigby being a tool, Bubblegum indulging her not so hidden “commanding” style, laughs, pratfalls, math, emotion sucking giant Manic Pixie Sticks…. I mean, what else COULD you want?
Review Fix: How do you want this comic to be remembered?
McCreery: Ooh, good question. I’d like this comic to be remembered as a well-told, funny, and warm-hearted story that reminds you that no matter how bad things get between friends, that power of friendship trumps all if you only let it.
Review Fix: What’s next?
McCreery: I released the fifth book in the Kill Shakespeare series – Past is Prologue: Juliet a couple of months ago, so I’m hitting shows to promote that and AT/RS, and I just finished the script for the first book of a YA series that I don’t believe I can announce. I’ve also started the script of a weird passion project of mine and the fantastic artist Jibola Fagbamiye, about the Nigerian super-star musician and activist Fela Kuti – that one won’t be for kids though. LOL.
Review Fix: Anything else you’d like to add?
McCreery: Just that I wanted to thank the incredible creators of both shows, Pendleton Ward and JG Quintel, as well as Cartoon Network, and BOOM! for giving me a chance to play in these two fantastic sandboxes. Oh, and the fans. Thanks for giving this crazy idea a chance!
